A prosecutor informed jurors that a former street gang leader masterminded the 1996 drive-by shooting of hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas as payback for his nephew’s assault. Duane (Keffe D) Davis, 63, faces a murder charge in Clark County, Nevada, for allegedly orchestrating the killing of Shakur, a prominent figure in the rap scene, in a drive-by incident near the Las Vegas Strip.
During opening statements at a Las Vegas courthouse, prosecutor Binu Palal revealed that Davis ensured the shooters were prepared to carry out the attack when the opportunity arose for revenge. Defense attorney Michael Sanft highlighted the lack of substantial evidence after 30 years and questioned the credibility of Davis’s statements, labeling them as unreliable.
The murder of Shakur contributed to the portrayal of violence in hip-hop culture during the peak of “gangsta” rap, fueling the East Coast-West Coast rap rivalry of that era. Davis, described as the instigator of the plot, sought vengeance for his nephew’s altercation with Shakur and his associates at the MGM Grand casino in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996.
Allegedly, the shooting stemmed from animosity between the South Side Compton Crips, led by Davis, and Mob Piru, associated with Marion (Suge) Knight and Death Row Records. Davis reportedly provided the murder weapon to two individuals in a vehicle pursuing Knight and Shakur, resulting in Shakur’s fatal shooting and Knight sustaining a minor injury.
Davis’s statements in 2018 about his involvement reawakened the cold case, leading to his arrest in 2023. His account of the events, detailed in his 2019 memoir, implicated his role in the shooting but did not identify the actual shooter. Davis may face murder charges under Nevada law for his participation in the crime without physically pulling the trigger.
The ongoing trial, presided over by Judge Carli Kierny, may include testimony from Marion (Suge) Knight, a pivotal figure present during Shakur’s murder, now serving a prison sentence on an unrelated conviction. Despite the continued mystery surrounding Shakur’s killing and the unsolved murder of rival rapper Christopher Wallace, the trial seeks to shed light on the events of that fateful night in 1996.
