Gunmen carried out a deadly shooting at a football field in central Mexico, resulting in the deaths of 11 individuals and injuries to 12 others. The Mayor of Salamanca, Cesar Prieto, disclosed that the assailants targeted the crowd after the game, with casualties including women and children.
Authorities in Guanajuato are actively investigating the incident in collaboration with federal agencies to enhance security measures in the area. Mayor Prieto highlighted the escalating crime situation in the city, appealing for assistance from President Claudia Sheinbaum to curb the violence. Guanajuato experienced a surge in homicides last year, with clashes between the Santa Rosa de Lima gang and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel.
Despite the tragic event, the Mayor emphasized the resilience of the city as a hub for industrial growth and development. The shooting occurred near Campos de las Cabañas pitches in the late afternoon, prompting a swift response from emergency services. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers arrived in three vans, indiscriminately firing shots despite the presence of children, resulting in over 100 shell casings being recovered at the scene.
The Guanajuato Prosecutor’s Office strongly condemned the violence, pledging to prioritize the victims and their families in the ongoing investigation. This incident followed a spate of violence in Salamanca, including multiple murders and a kidnapping in different locations. Additionally, human remains were found in the region, indicating ongoing security challenges.
While Mexico’s government reported a decrease in the murder rate for 2025 compared to previous years, concerns remain about the overall level of violence in the country. Analysts caution that official figures may not fully capture the extent of the violence in Mexico.
