Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy has emphasized that the UK’s stance on Greenland remains firm and unyielding, despite the recent threats from Donald Trump.
In response to the US President’s warning of imposing 10% tariffs on countries, including the UK, for their opposition to his territorial ambitions, Ms. Nandy affirmed the UK’s position but emphasized a desire to avoid escalating tensions with the US.
Following Keir Starmer’s criticism of Trump’s decision to enforce tariffs on NATO allies, Ms. Nandy echoed the sentiment, denouncing the tariffs as wrong, unhelpful, and counterproductive.
Ms. Nandy reiterated the UK’s position on Greenland’s future, emphasizing that it should be determined by the wishes of Greenland’s people and Denmark.
Recent developments saw the UK sending a military officer to Greenland as Denmark increased its military presence in the Arctic and High North.
Despite Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on countries opposing his Greenland bid, including the UK, Ms. Nandy maintained that the UK’s stance on Greenland is non-negotiable.
In response to queries about potential retaliation, Ms. Nandy underscored the importance of the US-UK relationship while reiterating the UK’s unwavering position on Greenland.
While acknowledging differing perspectives, Ms. Nandy stressed the importance of collaboration over conflict to serve collective interests.
European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, have expressed resistance to intimidation and blackmail, with EU ambassadors convening for urgent discussions on the issue.
Concerns have been raised that tariffs could detrimentally impact the economies of both the US and EU, potentially benefiting China and Russia amidst divisions among Allies.
