Amazon, the e-commerce behemoth, has announced its intention to reduce its global workforce by 16,000 employees. While the specific locations of the job cuts remain undisclosed, indications suggest that the impact on the UK may be minimal. Reports hint that positions in Amazon Web Services, retail, Prime Video, and human resources are likely to be affected.
This round of layoffs follows a previous announcement in October, where Amazon, established by tycoon Jeff Bezos with a net worth of £180 billion, revealed 14,000 job redundancies.
In a communication to employees, Beth Galetti, Amazon’s senior vice president of people experience and technology, acknowledged the challenging nature of the news and the reasons behind it. She mentioned that approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon would be affected by the reductions, emphasizing the company’s dedication to supporting impacted employees.
Galetti highlighted that affected US employees would have 90 days to seek internal job opportunities or receive severance pay if no alternative roles are secured. She reassured employees that despite the layoffs, Amazon remains committed to hiring and investing in critical areas essential for its future growth.
Addressing concerns about a potential pattern of recurring layoffs, Galetti clarified that it was not Amazon’s strategy to announce widespread reductions regularly. She emphasized the importance of adapting to changing customer needs and market dynamics to drive innovation and growth.
Reports surfaced that Amazon inadvertently notified its Web Services cloud-computing division employees of the upcoming layoffs through an email and meeting invitation sent prematurely. The email, signed by Colleen Aubrey, AWS’s senior vice president of applied AI solutions, incorrectly stated that affected employees in the US, Canada, and Costa Rica had already been informed of their job losses. AWS employees who received the email mentioned that the scheduled meeting was promptly canceled.
