“Virgin Media O2 to Decommission UK’s 2G Network by 2029”

In the UK, despite the widespread adoption of fast 4G and 5G technology in new phones, the older 2G network, which dates back to 1993, is still in use for certain devices like phones, alarms, and health gadgets.

Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to decommission the 2G network by 2029 as part of its network modernization strategy, focusing on enhancing 4G and 5G connectivity for improved performance and efficiency.

Although the discontinuation of 2G marks the end of an era, it will enable Virgin Media O2 to channel investments towards expanding and enhancing its advanced networks. The company anticipates that this upgrade will result in faster speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, aligning with consumer demands.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, highlighted a £700 million investment to revamp the mobile network and meet the evolving consumer needs. The shift away from 2G will ensure the delivery of dependable 4G and 5G services to all customers.

With the recent shutdown of the 3G network and adherence to the government’s 2G switch-off charter, Virgin Media O2 aims to manage the transition seamlessly without disrupting customers. While most users will not be affected, some businesses may need to prepare for the change in advance.

The scheduled 2029 shutdown provides customers and businesses with ample time to upgrade any devices reliant on 2G technology, allowing for a smooth transition.

2G, introduced in 1993, has been a fundamental element of mobile communication for years, enabling reliable voice calls and text messaging with broad coverage, particularly in areas where newer networks have limited reach. Despite the emergence of faster 4G and 5G networks, 2G remains valuable for its reliability, energy efficiency, and extensive coverage.

As the demand for advanced mobile services grows, Virgin Media O2’s decision to phase out 2G will enable the company to concentrate resources on developing the next generation of connectivity solutions.
