A renowned jockey narrowly escaped a fatal accident when her pelvis was severely injured by the weight of a falling horse she was riding. Sonja Logan, in 2023, faced a traumatic incident where she was targeted by a group of individuals attempting to steal her vehicle. The assailants inflicted serious injuries on her, including a broken nose, cut lip, and fractured front teeth just three weeks before her scheduled wedding day. Despite the distressing ordeal, the perpetrators fled the scene upon alerting others and were never apprehended. Logan recounted the excruciating pain she endured when trapped under a half-ton racehorse, describing it as the most intense suffering she had ever experienced.
While riding Jumping Power Two, a six-year-old gelding trained by her husband Tommy, Logan encountered a frightening episode when the horse became startled by an unknown stimulus. She recounted the moment the horse reared up in the starting gates, causing her to fall to the ground with the horse collapsing on top of her, resulting in a crushing blow to her pelvis. Following the incident, Logan was transported to Darwin Royal Hospital before being airlifted to Adelaide Royal Hospital due to the absence of a pelvic surgeon in Darwin. Medical procedures included the insertion of screws and a plate to stabilize her fractured hip.
Reflecting on the incident, Logan expressed gratitude for surviving the ordeal, acknowledging that if the horse had landed differently, the outcome could have been fatal. She emphasized the severity of the pain she endured, ranking it as the most intense she had ever felt, coupled with the fear of potential spinal injuries. Currently recovering at home with the aid of a walking frame, Logan anticipates a rehabilitation period of six to eight months before considering a return to riding.
Despite the challenges she faced, Logan’s determination led her back to horse riding following the carjacking incident. She successfully clinched the Alice Springs premiership and emerged as the top rider in Northern Territories. However, behind her professional achievements, Logan struggled with mental health issues, including depression and excessive drinking. To combat her mental decline, she embraced competitive bodybuilding, seeking solace in physical training and building a support system to navigate through her recovery journey.
In a statement, Logan highlighted the contrasting emotions between the horse-related accident and the previous assault she endured, emphasizing the innocence of the animal involved in the incident. Grateful for the unwavering support from her loved ones, particularly her husband Tommy, Logan expressed appreciation for their assistance throughout her recovery process.
