Snooker legend John Virgo’s passing has been attributed to a ruptured aorta, as disclosed following the announcement of his sudden death at the age of 79. Virgo, renowned for his achievements in the 1970s and 1980s, notably clinching the 1979 UK Championship and reaching the semi-finals of the World Championship in the same year, gained widespread fame in the 1990s through his role alongside comedian Jim Davidson on the television show Big Break.

Known as the voice of snooker, Virgo had a distinguished career as a commentator on the BBC, where his signature phrase “where’s the cue ball going?” became synonymous with his broadcasts. Virgo, who resided in Spain with his wife Rosie, received heartfelt tributes from loved ones and colleagues, including his wife and close friend James Malyon, expressing shock and sorrow over his unexpected passing.

Fellow snooker greats like Ronnie O’Sullivan and Stephen Hendry also honored Virgo, highlighting his immense contribution to the sport and his vibrant personality. Davidson, his co-host on Big Break, paid homage to Virgo’s talent and charisma, acknowledging the joy he brought to many through his work.

In 2020, Virgo and his wife made a home in Spain, hoping for a better climate to alleviate Virgo’s chronic neck pain. Survived by his children Gary and Brook-Leah from previous marriages, Virgo leaves behind a legacy cherished by fans and peers alike.
