An 18-year-old day care worker has been accused of causing the death of a baby just days before his first birthday in an alleged bid for attention. Theah Loudemia Russell was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and felony assault in the first and third degrees on January 13. It was not immediately clear if she had entered a plea or secured legal representation.
The arrest followed a three-month investigation into the passing of 11-month-old Harvey Muklebust. Russell had contacted emergency services on September 22, reporting that Harvey was not breathing.
Authorities initiated an inquiry into the incident at Rocking Horse Ranch in Savage, Minnesota, after responding to a previous report of a baby girl in distress just days before Harvey’s death. The girl, who was experiencing breathing difficulties and had blood and foam coming from her mouth, was taken to a hospital by her parents. Although initially thought to be a medical issue without foul play, the child was later discharged and seemed well.
Upon returning to the day care on September 22, the girl exhibited symptoms again and was brought to the hospital by her parents. However, the police were not notified on this occasion. Subsequently, the Minnesota Department of Human Services suspended the facility’s license due to concerns about potential harm to children.
During a press conference, Savage Police Chief Brady Juell mentioned that Russell’s behavior had raised suspicions, leading investigators to focus on her. Chief Juell stated that there was reason to believe Russell intentionally caused harm to the children for attention, with the incident involving Harvey resulting in his tragic death.
An obituary for Harvey, who was about to turn one, described him as a source of joy and happiness. A fundraising campaign was launched to cover funeral expenses, portraying Harvey as a cheerful and delightful child who brought happiness to everyone around him.
Chief Juell emphasized that the community had been deeply affected by the case, which involved a shocking and heartbreaking loss.
