During a visit to Helsinki, Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with members of the Finnish Border Guard, responsible for defending against Russian threats along Finland’s 830-mile border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in a raid on a Russian-affiliated vessel accused of tampering with undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland. Cooper also urged for a ban on the transportation of Russian oil to cut off a significant source of funding for Moscow.
Cooper’s discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb come amid heightened concerns about security in the Arctic region, particularly following US President Donald Trump’s remarks about acquiring Greenland to counter possible Russian or Chinese influence.
