“UK Vows Action on Russian Shadow Ships Funding Putin”

Britain is prepared to assist allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are believed to be funding Vladimir Putin’s military efforts, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to strengthen control over Russia’s covert fleet, a collection of deteriorating oil tankers sailing under fake flags to avoid Western sanctions. Cooper emphasized the need for more decisive measures against these clandestine vessels, which are suspected of providing financial support to the Kremlin for its actions in Ukraine and for disrupting crucial undersea cables.

While the UK has not yet engaged in boarding any of these ships, British forces supported the US in a daring operation to apprehend a tanker with ties to Russia accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. Authorities are reportedly exploring the legal justification for potential military intervention.

During a visit to Helsinki, Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with members of the Finnish Border Guard, responsible for defending against Russian threats along Finland’s 830-mile border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in a raid on a Russian-affiliated vessel accused of tampering with undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland. Cooper also urged for a ban on the transportation of Russian oil to cut off a significant source of funding for Moscow.

Cooper’s discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb come amid heightened concerns about security in the Arctic region, particularly following US President Donald Trump’s remarks about acquiring Greenland to counter possible Russian or Chinese influence. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions taken by European partners against illicit vessels, including incidents in the Baltic Sea and off the coast of France.

Cooper witnessed a demonstration of how Finnish Border Guards conduct vessel seizures, underscoring their capability to intervene with military force when necessary. The recent surge in Russian vessels operating near UK waters has raised alarm, prompting Defense Secretary John Healey to caution Putin after a Russian spy ship targeted RAF pilots with lasers. Cooper reiterated the UK’s commitment to cracking down on the Russian shadow fleet and its activities impacting national security.

The UK is poised to engage in enforcement operations against suspicious vessels but prefers collaborating with international allies to apply greater pressure on the shadow fleet. The visit to the Arctic Circle signifies the growing significance of security issues in the region, particularly in light of geopolitical tensions and strategic interests.
