Tax justice is a pressing issue in the UK. A recent report by Oxfam reveals that just over 50 individuals in Britain possess more wealth than nearly half of the entire population combined. Meanwhile, millions of Britons struggle with energy, food, or housing poverty, which not only impacts their quality of life but also hinders the economic progress of the nation.
The existing wealth disparity is largely attributed to the unequal tax system. Working individuals are taxed at a significantly higher rate compared to those who earn money through investments. Equalizing the taxation on all forms of income could generate an additional £12 billion annually.
Furthermore, implementing a wealth tax, such as a modest 2% levy on wealth exceeding £10 million, could yield £26 billion per year from only 20,000 individuals. These funds could be instrumental in addressing various societal needs, from infrastructure enhancements to bolstering healthcare services.
It is evident that the current tax regulations disproportionately burden the less affluent while benefiting the wealthy. Revising these laws to ensure fair taxation for all income sources is crucial for fostering a more equitable society and a stronger economy. By reshaping the tax system to benefit everyone, we can collectively strive towards a better future for the UK.
