Greenland Minister Warns Against US Threats

Greenlandic Minister Expresses Concern Over US Threats Amid Calls for Peaceful Resolution

A minister representing Greenland has voiced the sentiment of betrayal felt by the island’s inhabitants towards the United States while emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution. Naaja Nathanielsen, the business minister of the territory, conveyed concerns during a press briefing at Parliament, highlighting ongoing discussions with allies regarding potential responses to a hypothetical invasion by Donald Trump. She advocated for increased NATO presence on the island to counter potential threats from Russia and China.

Nathanielsen stressed the anxiety caused by Trump’s invasion threats and applauded the steadfast support from Britain and European allies. Emphasizing the pursuit of a peaceful resolution, she articulated the desire to avoid conflict and maintain friendly relations as allies. When asked about potential NATO support in the event of an invasion, she underscored the collective defense nature of the alliance.

The minister described the significant impact on the local population, noting heightened fear among children and widespread unease gripping the community. She acknowledged the recent escalation in US threats of deploying troops to Greenland, citing national security concerns. Responding to speculations about Trump’s motives, Nathanielsen acknowledged the complexity of the situation and the various narratives at play.

Expressing deep concern over Trump’s statements, she reiterated a sense of betrayal felt by the Greenlandic people, labeling the rhetoric as offensive and bewildering. Despite the tensions, Nathanielsen expressed gratitude for the solidarity shown by countries such as the UK, France, and Germany in support of Greenland and Denmark amid US threats.

US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are scheduled to meet with the foreign ministers of Denmark and Greenland to discuss Trump’s interest in acquiring the island. Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen reiterated the island’s non-negotiable status and its unwillingness to be under US ownership or rule.

Trump’s recent claim of needing to “take Greenland” to prevent Russia or China from gaining control has sparked international concern and condemnation. Greenland’s leadership remains resolute in their stance against any forced acquisition, emphasizing their sovereignty and autonomy.
