On Thursday, May 7, as the world observes World Password Day, it serves as a critical reminder for individuals to ensure the security of their online accounts. Many people still rely on easily crackable passwords and have the habit of reusing the same passwords across multiple accounts, leaving them vulnerable to cyber threats.
Research conducted by Hybrid Cloud Services revealed that one in eight individuals use a single password for all their accounts, a risky practice. Additionally, approximately 36% of people use between one and three passwords for all their online activities, highlighting a widespread security concern.
Only 19% of individuals opt for a different password for each account, which is considered a safer approach to online security. Despite repeated warnings from cybersecurity experts, common passwords like “admin,” “123456,” and “password” continue to be widely used in the UK, making accounts easily hackable.
Security experts recommend enhancing account protection by enabling two-factor authentication, creating longer and complex passwords, and using password managers to securely store credentials. Matt Cooke, EMEA Cybersecurity Strategist at Proofpoint, emphasized the importance of avoiding easily guessable passwords, enabling multi-factor authentication, and regularly updating passwords to enhance security.
To strengthen password security, individuals are advised to use passphrases instead of simple passwords, generate unique passwords for each account, and utilize password managers to maintain strong and distinct passwords across all accounts. By adopting these practices, individuals can significantly improve their online security and reduce the risk of falling victim to cyber threats.
