A mother haunted by the tragic loss of her daughter in a sea accident is advising parents to be firm with their children to potentially save lives.
Caitlin Ruddy, a 15-year-old college student from Newcastle, drowned after being swept out to sea during a coastal trip with friends to take a break from studying. Despite assuring her mother of her return, Caitlin’s life ended in a hospital bed as life-support was withdrawn.
Investigations later revealed that a powerful wave had pulled Caitlin from the north pier of Cullercoats Bay into the sea. Despite rescue efforts, including by lifeboat crews and a passerby, the teenager could not be saved once retrieved from the water.
A decade has passed since Caitlin’s tragic demise, leaving her family in perpetual sorrow. Urging parents to educate their children on the dangers of the sea, Caitlin’s mother stressed the importance of being realistic and straightforward with kids, emphasizing the fatal risks even small amounts of water can pose.
Recounting the day of the incident, Sabrina mentioned how Caitlin called her before her untimely death, expressing love in their final conversation. The sudden news of the accident was delivered by the police, leading to a heart-wrenching visit to the hospital where Caitlin’s life could not be rescued.
Following a coroner’s ruling of accidental death, Sabrina partnered with the RNLI to raise awareness by sharing Caitlin’s story as a cautionary tale. She highlighted the dangers the sea poses not only to individuals but also to those attempting to rescue them.
Caitlin’s family has since supported fundraising efforts for the RNLI in her memory. Sabrina revealed Caitlin’s aspirations to become a pilot and travel the world, dreams that were tragically cut short. The loss has also deeply affected Caitlin’s younger sister, who now harbors a strong fear of water due to the incident.
Nick Ayers, RNLI Regional Water Safety Lead for North and East, expressed gratitude for the family’s collaboration in promoting water safety advice, emphasizing the unpredictability of the sea and the importance of knowing survival techniques in case of emergencies.
