“Berwick Couple and Dog Tragically Killed in Collision”

Heartbroken family and friends are mourning the loss of a compassionate and affectionate couple who tragically perished in a collision involving a heavy goods vehicle.

Christine and Stephen Routledge, residents of Berwick, met a tragic end along with their pet dog when the vehicle they were traveling in collided with an HGV on the A1 near Buckton on January 14.

The collision occurred at approximately 7:40 am, prompting emergency services to swiftly respond. Regrettably, Mr. Routledge, aged 64, passed away at the scene, while Mrs. Routledge, aged 66, was transported to the hospital for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries. Their cherished dog Bear, accompanying them in the Skoda during the incident, also suffered injuries and did not survive.

A man in his thirties was apprehended on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, as reported by Chronicle Live. He has since been released pending further investigation.

In a heartfelt tribute, the family of Christine and Stephen described them as “loving” and “remarkable grandparents.” “Our parents were affectionate, generous, and deeply committed to our family,” expressed their loved ones in a statement.

“They were the pillars of our existence – always providing support, guidance, and unwavering love. They were extraordinary grandparents to our 10 children, who will deeply miss them.

“Their sudden departure in a car accident alongside their beloved dog Bear, whom they adored, has left an indescribable void. They lived with compassion and honesty, impacting many lives through their warmth and selflessness.

“While we are shattered by this loss, we are thankful for the memories, principles, and love they bestowed upon us, which will continue to inspire us daily. We find solace in knowing they are together.

“We are grateful for the overwhelming support, prayers, and empathy during this immensely challenging period, and we request privacy as we mourn and commemorate their lives.”

Subsequent to the collision, both the HGV driver and the Audi driver were hospitalized for treatment of their injuries sustained in the incident. They have since been discharged.

The Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) of Northumbria Police is conducting an inquiry into the collision. Sergeant Dave Roberts from the force conveyed, “Our sympathies are with the family and loved ones of Mr. and Mrs. Routledge during this tragic time. We are committed to offering them any assistance possible.

“We extend our gratitude to all who have contributed information to our ongoing investigation.
