The United Kingdom has recently acquired a cutting-edge weapon capable of firing eight rounds per minute while on the move at speeds of up to 100km/h.
Known as the RCH 155, this revolutionary mounted weapon is designed to be attached to a BOXER armored vehicle, enabling it to engage targets located 70km away. This new weapon system, developed under a £52 million contract with Germany, represents a significant enhancement for British military capabilities, incorporating valuable insights gained from recent conflicts such as the one in Ukraine.
One of the key features of the RCH 155 is its impressive operational range, allowing it to travel up to 700km without the need for refueling – a distance equivalent to a journey from Cornwall to Newcastle. Unlike traditional artillery systems that require stationary positioning before firing, this advanced weapon can engage targets while in motion, enhancing its speed and making it more challenging for adversaries to respond. Operated by just two crew members through advanced automation, the weapon offers the flexibility to engage targets from any direction without the need for repositioning.
Luke Pollard MP, the Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, emphasized the significance of this new artillery system, highlighting its capability to fire on the move and draw on lessons learned from conflicts like the one in Ukraine. The ability to strike targets from a distance of 70km and swiftly maneuver to evade counterattacks underscores the importance of rapid and mobile firepower in modern warfare, guiding strategic procurement decisions to align with evolving defense needs.
Currently, soldiers operate 14 Archer artillery systems as interim replacements for the AS90 guns provided to Ukraine. Through the collaborative contract between the UK and Germany, both nations will benefit from shared test data and facilities, ensuring access to top-tier equipment.
Edward Cutts, the Senior Responsible Owner of Mobile Fires in the Army, praised the joint demonstrator program as a testament to the strength and ambition of the Trinity House Agreement. By partnering with Germany, the UK accelerates the delivery of cutting-edge artillery capabilities efficiently and cost-effectively, setting a new standard in mobile artillery firepower and repositioning agility. This collaboration not only equips soldiers with state-of-the-art technology but also enhances interoperability between UK and German forces, crucial for NATO’s collective defense efforts.
In a recent development, Defence Secretary John Healey delivered a firm message to Vladimir Putin, asserting the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine and mobilizing troops swiftly in the event of a peace agreement. Amid escalating threats including cyber-attacks and disinformation, the UK recently launched a new military intelligence service to address emerging challenges to national security and global stability.
