“UK Voters Favor Australia-Style Ban on Under-16 Social Media”

A recent survey revealed that a majority of voters in the UK are in favor of implementing an Australia-style prohibition on social media for individuals under the age of 16. This decision follows the recent action taken by Australia to block access to various social media platforms for millions of young users, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Threads, TikTok, Twitter (now known as X), YouTube, Reddit, Kick, and Twitch.

According to a poll conducted by Mirror, 64% of respondents support a similar ban for under-16s, while only 19% oppose the idea. Joani Reid, a Scottish Labour MP and Chair of the Children’s Online Safety APPG, emphasized that the current situation is failing children and called for decisive action to address the harms caused by unregulated social media.

Advocates for the ban, such as the mother of Brianna Ghey, a murdered teenager, and Ian Russell, whose daughter took her own life after exposure to harmful online content, have been vocal about the need to protect young individuals from the dangers of social media. There have been proposals to restrict access to social media for teenagers, citing concerns about the negative impact on mental health and well-being.

Despite some opposition, including from NSPCC, which believes that blanket bans may drive teenagers to unregulated online spaces, there is growing support for stricter regulations on social media use among minors. The UK government, while not currently planning a blanket ban, is closely monitoring the situation in Australia and taking steps to ensure that online content is age-appropriate and safe for children.

The public sentiment reflects a growing awareness of the risks associated with unrestricted social media use among young individuals, prompting calls for stronger safeguards and regulations to protect children in the digital age.
