The UK government has indicated that ongoing peace negotiations concerning Ukraine are in a fragile state, emphasizing the need for Russian leader Vladimir Putin to halt violence and participate actively.
This statement followed remarks from US President Donald Trump less than a day earlier, suggesting that a resolution to the conflict is nearing. Trump, after meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Florida, stated that discussions on a security guarantee are almost 95% complete.
Both leaders acknowledged the presence of challenging issues that still need resolution. A spokesperson for Keir Starmer remarked that despite hopes for a fair and enduring peace agreement, recent Russian attacks on Ukraine have been devastating.
The spokesperson emphasized the need for Putin to demonstrate a genuine commitment to peace by ceasing hostilities and actively engaging in the available peace proposal. The UK has been collaborating with Ukrainian and American counterparts for several weeks to finalize an agreement that would prevent future Russian invasions.
Zelensky revealed that the US has offered Ukraine security assurances for a 15-year period as part of a potential peace initiative. However, he expressed a preference for a longer commitment, up to 50 years, to deter Russian aggression.
He stated, “Realistically, without security guarantees, this conflict will persist.” Negotiations are anticipated to intensify in the coming month, leading up to the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion.
While specific details of the security assurances remain undisclosed, Zelensky mentioned the involvement of “partners” in the plan. However, Putin has voiced opposition to NATO troop deployments in Ukraine, potentially posing a challenge to the negotiations.
According to the Kremlin, Russian forces are advancing in eastern Donetsk and continuing their offensive in southern Zaporizhzhia. A discussion between Putin and President Trump is expected soon, although there is no indication of direct communication between Putin and Zelensky.
During a recent statement, Trump expressed optimism about the progress of negotiations, suggesting a significant closeness to a resolution. Further discussions involving European leaders and a Ukrainian delegation are planned for January, potentially in Washington.
