An investigation revealed that a mother and her two children who perished in a Boxing Day fire at their residence in Gloucestershire died from exposure to fire-related fumes. Fionnghuala Shearman, 38, known as Nu, along with her kids, Eve, seven, and Ohner, four, tragically lost their lives when a blaze engulfed their home in Brimscombe, near Stroud.
During the inquiry at Gloucestershire coroner’s court, it was disclosed that Tom Shearman, a police officer, made a valiant but unsuccessful attempt to rescue his family amidst intense flames. Emergency services responded to the fire at the mid-terrace Cotswold stone cottage on Brimscombe Hill around 3 am as the inferno ravaged the property.
The Senior coroner for Gloucestershire, Katy Skerrett, initiated three separate inquests into the deaths of Mrs. Shearman and her children. She recounted the tragic events of that fateful night, indicating that only Tom Shearman managed to escape the burning cottage, while the other occupants were trapped inside due to the fire and smoke.
A preliminary cause of death provided by a forensic pathologist for all three family members was cited as “exposure to fire-related fumes.” Mrs. Shearman was identified through a tattoo on her body, while her children were identified via DNA analysis. The inquests were adjourned without a scheduled follow-up date as no family members were present at the brief hearing.
Authorities believe the fire originated on the ground floor, and investigations are underway to determine the cause, ruling out any suspicions. The blaze inflicted severe damage, destroying the roof, ceilings, stairs, and causing significant internal harm. A fundraising campaign for the family has garnered close to £440,000 in support.
