Lidl, a popular supermarket chain, is planning to enter the mobile phone market with budget-friendly plans to compete with major networks. To access these deals, customers will need a Lidl Plus account.
This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by Lidl, which includes not only offering mobile services but also opening 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the trend of non-traditional competitors in the telecom industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to introduce cost-effective phone plans. While the service is already available in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to expand to the UK, US, France, and Spain.
Lidl will collaborate with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), utilizing existing infrastructure instead of building its own network. This strategic partnership will enable Lidl to offer mobile plans efficiently.
Aside from its telecom venture, Lidl is also expanding its retail footprint by opening over 50 new stores, creating 2,000 job opportunities. The supermarket chain’s expansion is part of its £600 million investment plan, with locations including Abbots Langley, Warrington, and Thornbury confirmed for new store openings.
Ryan McDonnell, chief executive of Lidl GB, emphasized the positive impact on communities through job creation and regional growth. The investment aligns with Lidl’s commitment to providing affordable and healthy food options to all customers.
As part of the agreement, Schwarz Group, Lidl’s parent company, will acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL, enhancing its digital presence in the telecom sector. Schwarz Group’s expansion into tech-related ventures, such as cloud computing and cybersecurity, signifies its broader digital strategy.
The move by Lidl to diversify into new markets could potentially disrupt established telecom providers by offering competitive pricing and enhanced convenience. Employment minister Kate Dearden praised the job creation initiative as a positive contribution to local communities.
