A mother who attributed night sweats, joint pain, and abnormal bleeding to menopause was surprised to learn she had cervical cancer despite being cleared in a recent smear test. Michelle Griggs, 50, a social club manager, regularly attended screenings and had received reassuring results.
However, as her health deteriorated, she consulted her GP and was diagnosed with cervical cancer. “It must have progressed rapidly, and I am fortunate that it was identified at stage one, a very early stage,” Michelle remarked. “When I researched my symptoms online, it was easy to assume they were menopause-related.”
Yet, Michelle’s symptoms worsened, leading her to seek medical attention. “I felt extremely fatigued, prompting me to get checked, and thankfully I did,” she shared. “After a scan, when they asked me to come in the next day, I knew it wasn’t good news.”
Following her diagnosis, Michelle underwent an intense regimen of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and brachytherapy, involving the insertion of radiation-containing rods near her cervix. She underwent two months of radiotherapy treatment at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, relying on friends and family for transportation due to not driving.
Throughout her treatment, Michelle continued working when possible, supported by colleagues and club members to stay occupied and maintain a positive mindset. She emphasized the crucial role of her supportive network, particularly two close friends who accompanied her to appointments and treatments.
In September, Michelle received a clean bill of health and will undergo regular check-ups to monitor for cancer recurrence. Praising the hospital teams and Macmillan nurses for their exceptional care, she highlighted the importance of available support, especially for transportation to London for brachytherapy.
Encouraging others to promptly seek medical attention for any concerning changes, Michelle is actively supporting Cervical Cancer Awareness Month. “My advice to others is to address any suspicious symptoms immediately; otherwise, the outcome may not be as fortunate as mine, and do not hesitate to seek assistance,” she emphasized.
