Zipcar, a car rental company, has revealed its intention to cease operations in the UK by the end of this year. The UK general manager, James Taylor, informed customers via email that discussions are ongoing, and the company has halted bookings past December 31. Taylor stated that Zipcar is initiating formal consultations with its UK staff with the proposal to discontinue operations in the UK.
Existing customers who have reserved a car for Christmas will still be able to proceed with their bookings, while those who have booked a vehicle for the New Year will be contacted by the company. Customers with reservations after December 31 will receive a refund without incurring a cancellation fee.
Taylor emphasized that while the proposal to end UK operations is underway, customer accounts will remain active until a final decision is reached post-consultation. Zipcar, an American company, provides hourly and long-term car and van rentals through a mobile app, offering three membership options: a basic plan with no monthly fee, a smart plan at £6 per month, and a plus plan at £15 per month.
The reason behind the sudden closure of Zipcar’s UK operations was not disclosed. Operations in the US will continue unaffected, requiring a US membership for usage. The UK branch employed 71 individuals as of last year, with reported losses of £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer trips.
Zipcar’s financial accounts for 2024 highlighted increased cost pressures throughout the year, citing rising electricity and insurance costs, as well as market volatility affecting residual values. The company reported a significant pre-tax loss compared to the previous year, attributing it to decreased revenue resulting from fewer trips and shorter durations, influenced by the cost-of-living crisis impacting discretionary spending.
