“Starmer Regrets Backing Activist Amid Controversial Posts”

Keir Starmer expressed regret over his previous statement of being pleased about democracy activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah’s return to the UK after controversial social media posts resurfaced. The Prime Minister voiced frustration over not being informed earlier about “abhorrent” comments made by the British-Egyptian dual national dating back to 2010, where he seemed to advocate violence against Zionists and the police.

El-Fattah, a prominent figure in the Arab Spring movements, arrived in the UK on Boxing Day following the lifting of a travel ban post his release from prison. Despite apologizing for his remarks, calls from Tory and Reform party members to revoke his citizenship have emerged, although there are currently no plans for such action.

Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper initiated a review into “serious information failures” that led to senior officials being unaware of the controversial posts. When questioned about issuing an apology, Starmer admitted regret and acknowledged the need for better communication within the government to prevent such oversights.

El-Fattah obtained UK citizenship in December 2021 under then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson. His imprisonment on charges of disseminating false information was deemed a violation of international law by UN investigators. El-Sisi, the Egyptian President, granted him a pardon in September following lobbying efforts from both Conservative and Labour administrations.

Upon his arrival in the UK and reunion with his son in Brighton, El-Fattah expressed remorse for his past comments, recognizing their hurtful nature. Downing Street condemned the posts as “abhorrent” but deemed his subsequent apology as sufficiently sincere. The PM’s spokesman reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting British citizens facing unfair detentions abroad while maintaining a condemnation of the historical tweets’ content.
