German pop singer Melanie Mueller faces financial ruin after Hitler salute conviction

A pop singer, Melanie Mueller, faced financial ruin after being convicted for making a Hitler salute during a performance. Mueller, from Germany, tried to clear her name by appealing the conviction, stating that she did not perform the salutes as alleged. However, the Leipzig Regional Court upheld the conviction, relating to a concert in September 2022 where Mueller was accused of repeatedly raising her arm in a Hitler salute, inciting the audience to chant “Heil” in response.

As a result of the conviction, Mueller disclosed a significant decline in her financial situation, struggling with debts, relying on family support, and facing the potential forced sale of her home. Although the court reduced the financial penalty, Mueller’s appeal for a complete acquittal was denied. She expressed that the damage was already done, estimating a loss of approximately £345,000 in net income.

Mueller’s legal troubles escalated further when police found drugs in her flat during a search in August 2023, leading to an additional drug possession charge. Despite her challenges, Mueller maintained that the controversial gesture was part of her performance routine, not a deliberate Nazi symbol. Nevertheless, the court dismissed her explanation.

Currently, Mueller earns a modest income of around £1,300 per month, working in event planning for a camping and catering company, as her music career has significantly diminished. Her financial struggles include owing large sums to tax authorities and other creditors, with her house in Leipzig facing forced auction proceedings. Additionally, she receives no financial support from her ex-husband, with whom she co-parents two children.

Mueller’s once thriving music career has dwindled, with streaming platforms yielding minimal income. Despite her ongoing legal battles and financial hardships, she continues to deny any intentional association with Nazi symbols, maintaining that her actions were misconstrued as part of her artistic performance.
