Border Officers to Confiscate Phones from Small Boat Arrivals

Border officers are set to confiscate phones and SIM cards from individuals arriving by small boats. The implementation of new legal powers, effective starting Monday, has been praised as a significant step in combatting smuggling operations. Officials express surprise over the limited authority to seize phones, considering the array of immigration laws enacted under the current government.

During the previous administration, the Home Office acknowledged acting unlawfully in seizing phones from small boat arrivals following a legal challenge in the High Court. Britain’s Border Security Commander, Martin Hewitt, emphasized the indifference of criminal smuggling gangs to human life. The Border Security Command has already conducted nearly 4,000 disruptions against these networks, ranging from cash seizures to the conviction of major figures in the criminal hierarchy.

The initiative marks a crucial advancement in enabling authorities to intensify their efforts against these nefarious gangs, fortify borders, and prevent loss of life. Phone seizures will commence at the Manston immigration facility in Kent, utilizing specialized technology to extract data from devices. Additionally, officers will be granted expanded search powers to locate hidden SIM cards.

Furthermore, individuals found involved in the transportation or storage of equipment, such as boat engines for trafficking purposes, now face a maximum prison sentence of 14 years. Those engaged in planning or researching illegal migration activities can be imprisoned for up to five years. Borders Minister Alex Norris reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing border security and combating the criminal networks orchestrating these dangerous operations.

The ongoing issue of Channel crossings poses a significant challenge for the authorities, with a 13% increase reported year-on-year. The data reveals that 41,472 individuals undertook the perilous journey, a rise from 36,816 the previous year but below the peak of 45,774 in 2022. The number of small boat arrivals has notably surged since recording 299 arrivals in 2018.
