“Throwback Deal: Birmingham Chippy Offers 20p Chips on TikTok”

A well-known fish and chip eatery is taking a trip down memory lane by reintroducing a beloved menu item for a mere 20p.

Nassar Iqbal, affectionately known as ‘Uncle Nas’ in Birmingham, has been a fixture in the city’s dining scene. After operating a nearby restaurant, he established Hot Spot in Billesley in 2004.

In a bid to engage with younger audiences on TikTok, Uncle Nas is offering a special deal of 20p traditional chips, prepared without any condiments, just salt and vinegar.

The initiative aims to provide youngsters with an affordable post-school treat that they may have missed out on. On January 14, between 3pm and 5pm, customers can enjoy hot servings of chips for just 20p.

Uncle Nas hopes to evoke nostalgic memories for his older patrons while creating new experiences for the younger generation.

In an interview with Birmingham Live, Uncle Nas shared, “The younger TikTok followers are unaware that chips were once priced at 20p. Back in the 80s, we used to sneak out of school at lunchtime to grab 20p chips with extra salt and vinegar and relish them.”

He added, “Kids today haven’t had that simple pleasure, so I decided to reintroduce it to bring back memories and offer them that experience.”

While maintaining 20p chips long-term is not sustainable for a business in 2026 due to escalating costs impacting chip shops nationwide, Uncle Nas continues to attract new customers through his social media presence.

With over a million likes on TikTok and nearly 29.8k followers, Hot Spot has expanded its reach. Uncle Nas shared, “Our TikTok journey began as a way to connect with the community, but it evolved into something more significant. Amidst negativity and Islamophobia, I wanted to spread positive messages through social media.”

Through their online platforms, Hot Spot showcases stories of the chippy and its loyal clientele. Despite the bygone era of budget-friendly meals, Uncle Nas remains committed to serving the local community.

He acknowledged the competitive market and the inevitable price adjustments, but emphasized his efforts to keep prices reasonable.
