Only The Poets, a band from Reading, is offering an unsigned act the opportunity to perform with them at Brixton Academy. The group is set to take the stage at the South London venue in a few weeks, having already made history by offering tickets for just £1. Formed eight years ago, the quartet comprises frontman Tommy Longhurst, guitarist Clem Cherry, bassist Andy ‘Roo’ Burge, and drummer Marcus Yates, and has achieved global success.
Having toured the United States and supported artists like Yungblud, Lewis Capaldi, and Louis Tomlinson, Only The Poets remain dedicated to supporting grassroots venues and providing a platform for emerging musicians. In a departure from the norm where support acts are typically signed to major labels, the band is giving one lucky artist or group the chance to perform in front of 5,000 people at Brixton Academy on February 2. The shortlisted acts will showcase their talent at The Purple Turtle in Reading on January 31 during the launch of Only The Poets’ debut album, “And I’d Do It Again.”
Expressing their excitement on Instagram, the band shared their dream of playing at Brixton Academy and the importance of supporting aspiring artists. To apply for the opportunity, interested parties are required to comment on the band’s Instagram post and then visit their website. Fans attending the Reading show will have a say in selecting the support act for the Brixton performance.
The band emphasized the significance of grassroots venues in nurturing new talent and shaping their own musical journey. Tommy highlighted the symbolic value of performing at Brixton Academy as a culmination of their efforts, while Clem stressed the organic and natural process of creating their upcoming album. The band’s belief in destiny and their commitment to celebrating their progress underscore the essence of their record, “And I’d Do It All Again,” set for release on January 30.
Reflecting on the pivotal role of grassroots venues in the music industry, the band members shared their personal connections to these spaces and their belief in the transformative power of live music experiences. As they prepare to launch their album, Only The Poets remain rooted in their beginnings and eager to inspire a new generation of musicians through their music and performances.
