Keir Starmer and European leaders have issued a strong warning to Donald Trump regarding his interest in Greenland. The US President’s recent comments expressing seriousness about acquiring the Danish territory have caused concern. In a joint statement, the leaders of France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Denmark, and Poland emphasized that Greenland’s fate should be determined solely by its people and the Danish government.
Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, cautioned that any US attempt to take over Greenland could jeopardize the NATO defense alliance. Trump’s public declaration of wanting Greenland for national security reasons has stirred diplomatic tensions. He argued that the territory is crucial for US and European security interests.
The leaders’ statement underscores the importance of upholding the UN Charter principles, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity. They reaffirmed the US as a vital ally in maintaining Arctic security, citing the 1951 defense agreement between Denmark and the US.
Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected Trump’s assertions. Frederiksen warned that an attack on a NATO member would have severe consequences for the alliance’s unity and security guarantees. Keir Starmer supported Frederiksen’s stance, emphasizing that Greenland’s future should be decided by Denmark and Greenland alone.
Despite Trump’s claims about Russian and Chinese presence in Greenland, both Denmark and Greenland remain committed to the NATO alliance’s collective defense principle. Health Secretary Wes Streeting reiterated the UK’s support for Greenland’s self-determination and its role within the Kingdom of Denmark and NATO.
