“Decade Later: Conviction in Birthday Fire Murder”

A full decade has passed since the conviction of Don Collins for murder, triggered by a deathbed video where the victim identified him and disclosed his shocking motive. The victim, Robbie Middleton, was only eight years old when Collins committed the barbaric act, binding him to a tree, dousing him in petrol, and setting him on fire during what should have been a celebratory birthday.

Despite suffering burns on 99% of his body, Robbie resiliently clung to life for over ten years, succumbing to skin cancer resulting from the severe burns. In 2015, Collins was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with Robbie’s mother, Colleen, expressing unease about the killer’s demeanor even during his childhood.

As we near the 11th anniversary of the justice served in this chilling case, we revisit the tragic events. Colleen and Bobby, Robbie’s parents, recalled how Robbie, the youngest of their three children, cherished birthdays. On his eighth birthday in 1998, Robbie joyfully received a new tent before encountering Collins on his way home, who had allegedly assaulted him previously.

Despite enduring numerous surgeries and skin grafts, Robbie’s positive outlook inspired his family, although his suffering intensified over time. Eventually diagnosed with skin cancer due to the burns, Robbie passed away at the young age of 20 in 2011, shortly after recording a video accusing Collins of his crimes.

Collins, previously convicted of sexual assault, faced murder charges after the emergence of Robbie’s deathbed video as crucial evidence. Witnesses also came forward during the trial, alleging further instances of assault by Collins. Despite initially pleading not guilty, Collins received a 40-year prison sentence, bringing a sense of closure to Robbie’s family.

Colleen, relieved by the verdict, expressed her belief that Robbie would be content with the outcome. The family was granted a symbolic $150 billion in a civil case against Collins, with Colleen emphasizing the importance of recognizing Robbie as a victim deserving justice.
