The FIA has officially announced that Mohammed ben Sulayem has been re-elected for a second term as the president of the motorsport governing body. Ben Sulayem emerged as the sole candidate due to election regulations that restricted other contenders from entering the race.
Securing a significant 91.5 percent of the vote at the FIA General Assembly in Uzbekistan, Ben Sulayem received a standing ovation from the assembly members. Nevertheless, the validity of the election process remains under scrutiny, with a scheduled hearing in mid-February to assess the situation.
Challenged by Laura Villars, Tim Mayer, and Virginie Philippot, Ben Sulayem’s competitors failed to nominate a complete list of potential vice-presidents from different global motorsport regions as required by FIA rules. The absence of viable alternatives led to their ineligibility for the ballot, prompting criticism from Mayer and legal action initiated by Villars in France.
Despite the ongoing controversies, the FIA proceeded with the election, confirming Ben Sulayem’s re-election at the General Assembly. Ben Sulayem, who initially assumed office in 2021 by defeating Graham Stoker, will continue to lead the organization for another four-year term. He took over from former Ferrari team principal Jean Todt, who had served three terms before stepping down.
