Paul Lim has once again etched his name in the history books by defeating Jeffrey de Graaf at Ally Pally. The 71-year-old has solidified his position as the oldest player to secure a victory at the PDC World Championship.
In a stunning upset, Lim triumphed over De Graaf, who is 35 years his junior, with a 3-1 scoreline, securing his spot in the second round. This victory comes 44 years after his initial appearance at the World Championship.
Having qualified for Ally Pally for the first time since the 2022 World Championship, where he was eliminated in the opening round by Joe Murnam, Lim showcased a solid performance. Despite an average of just 86.52 and two 180s, he managed to outshine a below-par De Graaf.
Expressing gratitude for his accomplishment, Lim acknowledged the support of the crowd following his win. He emphasized the importance of seizing opportunities in the game, regardless of one’s skill level.
Lim’s previous notable victory on the grand stage occurred in the preceding year’s championship against the current World No.2, Luke Humphries. If Humphries emerges victorious against Ted Evetts later in the evening, a potential rematch between Lim and Humphries in the second round could take place.
Reflecting on Humphries’ dedication and talent, Lim commended him as a formidable opponent while expressing optimism about facing him again. Despite recognizing Humphries’ skills, Lim believes that any player can be defeated on a given day.
Known as the Singapore Slinger, Lim’s enduring presence in the world of darts has cemented his status as an iconic figure. Renowned for being the first player to achieve a nine-darter in the 1990 BDO tournament against Jack McKenna, Lim earned a substantial £52,000 bonus for this remarkable feat.
