“Iran Protests Escalate Amidst Rising Death Toll”

Nationwide protests challenging Iran’s theocracy have continued for over two weeks, with activists reporting at least 116 deaths linked to the demonstrations. The protests have gripped the streets of Iran’s capital and its second-largest city, with violence escalating amidst a communication blackout in the country.

The internet shutdown and severed phone lines have made it challenging to monitor the protests from outside Iran. The death toll continues to rise, and over 2,600 individuals have been detained, as per the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency. Concerns are mounting that the lack of information could embolden hard-liners within Iran’s security apparatus to crack down harshly on the protestors, despite warnings from President Trump about potential repercussions.

Videos shared online, likely transmitted via Starlink satellite technology, depict demonstrators gathering in Tehran’s Punak neighborhood. The footage shows street closures, protesters waving illuminated mobile phones, banging on metal objects, and setting off fireworks. Other clips capture peaceful marches and car horns blaring in solidarity.

In Mashhad, the country’s second-largest city, clashes between protesters and security forces have been recorded, with debris and burning dumpsters obstructing the roadways. Mashhad, known for the Imam Reza shrine, a significant site in Shiite Islam, has also witnessed unrest. Meanwhile, Iranian state TV showcased calm scenes in various cities on Sunday, excluding Tehran and Mashhad.

Exiled Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi urged demonstrators to join the protests, with some expressing support for the Shah during the demonstrations. However, it remains unclear whether this backing is for Pahlavi himself or a longing for the pre-1979 Islamic Revolution era.

The protests, marked by sporadic gatherings and security force presence, have been met with surveillance drones and security measures by Iranian authorities. The situation remains tense, with the demonstrations showing no signs of abating as the unrest in Iran unfolds.
